Parenting 101 #4- Fire Safety
- Maintain and Install smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.
- Make and practice a fire escape plan.
- Clear all exits and keep them clear.
- Post emergency numbers by each phone.
- Hide lighters and matches from children.
- Check electrical cords for fraying, cracks, and exposed wires and replace any that are.
- Do not overload outlets. Use multiple power strips with built in circuit breaker and surge protectors.
- Do not run electrical cords under rugs.
- Install ground-fault circuit interrupted in outlets near sink areas and outdoors.
- Unplug small appliances when not in use.
- Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything that can catch fire.
- Turn of space heaters before leaving home or going to bed.
- Blow out candles before leaving home or going to bed.
- Store flammable products, cleaning products, and aerosol cans away from sources of heat.
- Have a qualified technician inspect furnace every year.
- Change furnace filters frequently.
- Clean the lint screen on the clothes dryer before each use.
- Clean fireplace, coal stove, and wood stove chimney before each heating session.
